APSLEY

Anthony Phillips-Smith was perhaps better known as Apsley (APS…) and was a talented artist. He first joined the Alvis Owner Club in 1965 owning a TB14. His drawings and cartoons were a regular feature of the Club Calendar (of which he was an editor for many years), and he produced Christmas cards for both the Alvis Owner Cub and Coast Watch. He authored several books.

In October 1998 he co-organized the first Remembrance of Major Harvey on the 75th anniversary of Harvey’s Brooklands victory, and this became an annual event.

He also compiled the list of ALVIS AGENTS AND IMPORTERS

APSLEY, aka Tony Phillips-Smith, with his Jensen woody pictured in 1998.

He undertook many commissions to draw Alvis cars, such as his own…

With failing health, Tony worked with his good friend Michael Edwards who produced a splendid book of Tony’s work “Apsley and Old Cars”, published by Surrenden Press in 2019.

Tony died on Sunday 26th May 2019, in a nursing home at Mullion, Cornwall.

The Trust now holds much of Tony’s original art work which is being catalogued. His own Speed 20 featured regularly.

Members of the Trust are invited to view the collection so that his legacy will live on.
