AJY 33 with lady and boy

Steve Tillyer sent this period photo of 4.3 Litre SC Vanden Plas short chassis Tourer chassis 14320, AJY 33, with the following comment “Period pic attached. Sorry no details of when, where and whom”. I sent a copy of the photo to Michael Mather-Lees whose mother was given the car as a birthday present. Michael replied, “The photograph of AJY 33 must have been taken prior to 1938,when the car was bought as a birthday present, it being a few months old by then. I do not recognize either the house or the people in the photograph, and notice that it carries badges that were not on it when I knew it”.

According to the Car Record 14320 was despatched on 22 12 1937 to W. Mumford, Ltd., St. Andrews Street, Plymouth, Devon. The first owner noted on the Guarantee Card on, 23 December 1937, was W. G. Whitford Hawke, 14 George Street, Plymouth, Devon.

This little mystery is, who are the people in the photo, where and when was it taken?

  1. I first came across this car in 1967. It belonged to Olaf Lund senior, the owner of Tillingham Street Garage in Birmingham. He was a car dealer with a serious love of Alvis cars. I believe he told me he had found the car in abandoned condition in Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. He carried out a big restoration and the car appeared with him for some years at my Noggin & Natter near Warwick in the late ’60’s. It disappeared for many years. It has re appeared and is having a major restoration. It looks great in the picture – what was the colour scheme? Was this the first 4.3 VDP SC sports?

    1. my father was Olaf Paul Lund (jr) who went on to run the saltley premises of Olaf Paul lund and son before his death in 91…. I remember these beautiful motors very well…. I will see if I can shed some light on the photo….

  2. Just a thought. My Sister-in-law Pat thought she had found a colour photograph of AH 62 – my Father-in-Law owned in the 50’s – however, it turned out to be of AJY 33 and she wonders if the current owner would like to have this framed photograph. Problem is who IS the present owner ???? Can anyone help
