Thirty-five years ago Alvis invited car owners to attend an event at the Works to mark the closing of the old factory at Holyhead after seventy years. Clive Taylor was there to capture the images, some of which appeared in the Bulletin. A comprehensive selection is now in a new gallery on the page 1989 – Coventry and Duxford together with the contemporary Bulletin report.
From the Roy Probert Collection a new gallery of the photos recording the building of the aero engine facility completed in 1956 can be found on the new page Baginton.

Hello John
Were the Baginton pictures extracted from an impressive volume that included plans of the Site, (possibly the site engineer’s progress report of construction)?
George Clarke showed this volume when Holyhead Road in the late 1980s, during early preparations for demolition, and everyone had to sort through cabinets left undisturbed, some for decades. I remember it well, because one of the plans showed a service tunnel running through much of the site, that I proposed using as a test range for proving armour configurations. Nothing came of that, but have wondered several times what happened to to a most impressive tome. Hopefully, Roy Probert looked after it, and it is now with AAT.
I am also somewhat surprised that Roy made no mention of the conversion of No 8 bed for gas turbine testing. This would have been around 1968, when Alvis was running Rover Gas Turbines. i’m about to rush off for to London for the weekend, so scratching the grey matter searching for further detail will have to wait a more propitious moment.
Best wishes Martin

Hi
My father Roy Probert documented the demolition of The Alvis in detail with over 100 photos that he took whilst this building was demolished all those years ago.
Amazing photos of the offices and computers used and the factory. These photos belong in a museum. I’m not sure what use they would be to anyone but something to look at in years to come.
