Jack Straw on the campaign trail

Welcome to the wonderful world of Fourteens. We have now grown too large for this main site.

Click  here for the main TA14/TB14 site.

We hope you will enjoy and find useful the general/technical information and photos (over 1000). There is always more information being added. You can become a follower to receive regular updates or dive into the site at anytime. We are always looking for more Fourteen related information. Also why not trawl through Lost and Rogue Cars to see if you can identify any of our missing Cars.

First of all my compliments with your fantastic initiative on the Alvis archive.

If this is only the beginning and you/we succeed in maintaining this level of quality: “you ain’t seen nothing yet!”

I attach  two pictures on the 1947 Geneva car show which I got via my great-uncle Frans Vrijaldenhoven (84) who is one of the best documented Automotive Historians in NL and beyond.

Keep up the good work and there is more to follow from this side of the North Sea.

1947 First post-war continental car show Geneva (Frans was there). One of the pictures shows the Alvis Stand. If you combine the 2 pictures, with a little bit of imagination, you get an impression of the total show. Question: who built the TA 14 DHC seen from behind? Who has more pictures of the show?

The answer is on the Fourteen site! click Alvis14

  1. Mike,

I’m very new to Alvis ownership, a week and some hours as I write. My car is a ’49 Mulliner saloon. I bought it from a lady in Duns and it now resides in Wemyss Bay. So you car is not alone in Scotland.

    regards

    David

  2. in my past 50 yrs of living and breathing all sorts of vintage veteran and classic cars such as Vauxhall buick Bentley sunbeam Renault , and others, ihave never had such enjoyment as owning my first alvis tb14 ch 23504 . I used to take {maralyn } to many car shows rallys and just the sunday drive . she was always met with such comments as what is it? or it must be worth a fortune . infact probably the only negative comments were from some other alvis owners who thought she shouldn’t wear the alvis badge. I have since owned another tb14 which is now in the gossford car museum and also a tb21 roadster . and am now about to take on another tb21 written off some 50yrs ago.. as far as I am concerned beauty is in the eye of the beholder. but I think both models are stunning great cars to own alan bratt

  3. Waar kan ik info vinden voor het afstellen van een carburator van een alvis ta 14 ? Afstellen van vooronsteking ?
    Met vriendelijke groeten Marcel
Where can I find info for adjusting a carburetor of an alvis ta 14? Adjusting pre-inflammation?
    With kind regards Marcel

  4. Thanks Eileen, for an excellent history. As a recent purchaser of a Fourteen Tickford DHC (which may be the only one in Australia), I have found Eileen to be a wonderful source of priceless information, particularly when one of the pram irons snapped on a recent tour of Tasmania.

I also have the privilege of owning a TA21G Graber FHC, a TE21 FHC & a TF21FHC. They are all fine cars, but the Fourteen is something special. To motor down the country roads where I live north of Melbourne, with the hood fully down on an autumnal day is something special – that car is alive, in a way the 3 Litres aren’t. One can almost feel the spirit of the men who built her at Holyhead Road, all those years ago.

  5. Further to my earlier post, my wife Pauline and I recently purchased a Fourteen DHC with coachwork by Tickford/Richard Mead. Alex Simpson of Earley Engineering attended the auction and obtained the purchase for us. Alex and his team then got the car ready for use on our visit to England in September.

She (we have called her Maud) has a Tickford MG WA body that Richard Mead bought from Tickfords after WWII and fitted to a Fourteen chassis.

Pauline and I recently spent some happy days touring around the Cotswolds in Maud, who performed splendidly, notwithstanding that it rained every day. We plan to use her again on our next visit in mid-2019.

Many thanks to Alex Simpson and his team and to Eileen Goddin for her invaluable information.

    1. ps I SOLD IT IN 1988 SEEN PICS of it IN BELGIUM , ITS THE SAME COLOUR ,KYP 87,FAB CAR , GOT THE ALVIS TOOL BOX ON EBAY PRESENTLY , IT KEPT AS A MOMENTO BUT SADLY SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENTS NOW

  6. Are there any Alvis owners near me ? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, California . I own a 1949 Alvis TA14 DHC.

      1. Thank you so much – that was most helpful. I found how to click on the two Databases which give all the details. Only, I’m not quite clear: the first one is of chassis numbers 20500-21999, the second is of 22001-23830. Does that mean 20500-21999 are TA 14s whereas 22001-23830 are TB 14s? If not, how do we tell which cars are TA and which TB? For example your 12/60 register is totally helpful in providing precise information as to which are TJ, which TK and which TL; but I don’t see this detail in the 14 register

The other Register I can’t find (if you could possibly be so kind and patient!) is the one for Vintage (12/40 and 12/50) cars; where is that to be found, please?

Thank you so much for your kind help. I will be e-mailing you a copy of my ‘complete’ list of all known pre-1964 Birmingham vehicles as soon as it is ready!

        Jonathan

      2. The TB14, AP Metalcraft start at 23500. The vintage models are catered for by the Alvis Register and we have not yet published those registers although you will find the registrations in David Culshaw’s book “Alvis Society”. I have added you as a subscriber to the website so you can see any new information as it is published.

      3. Just one comment on the 14 Register: 21958 JOM 679 looks most odd there, quite out of sequence; it cannot possibly have been registered JOM 679 as early as 1948. You’ll find the JOMs later on: 23092 and 094, from April 1949.

Very many thanks and warmest best wishes

        Jonathan
